The coronavirus outbreak started as early as November 2019 in Wuhan, China. Since its worldwide spread, many countries have been under lock down. This means that no one can travel, go to schools or offices except the professionals who are direly needed to keep the situation under control.

Many efforts have been made to keep the public at home. Some have been successful but others haven’t. There are still many people who feel imprisoned in their homes. That’s because man is a social animal. It’s in our nature to be active and socialize. If someone is told to stay home, the person can stay for one day, two days or up to one week. But after that, the person becomes restless. So how to we pass our time while staying at home.

Use this opportunity to perform meditation. The Oxford English Dictionary defines meditation as “to focus one’s mind for a period of time, in silence or with the aid of chanting, for religious or spiritual purposes or as a method of relaxation.” No matter your religion or race, meditation is for everyone. We are always worrying about our job, family, money and so many other things that we don’t even have time for ourselves. Meditation is not only spiritually beneficial but also soothing for our mind and body. There are many apps available such as Insight Timer and Calm. There are also YouTube videos you can search to get the one that suits you most.

You can also perform exercises at home. Although this isn’t as good as going to the gym, unless you can afford to have a fully equipped gym facility in your house. However, it can help you keep in shape during this period. You can use apps such as 7 Minute Workout or you can even search on YouTube for videos on indoor exercises.

Try out new recipes. Since you have all the time in the world, this is one of the useful things you can do. If you get tired of eating a particular food, search for new and simple recipes online. There are many recipes nowadays which require a few ingredients and you can even end up learning about food from different cuisines.

Spend more time with your family. We are so much busy with our lives that we don’t have enough time for our family members and most especially the older members. This is an opportunity to sit down, relax, talk and laugh with your loved ones. As you spend more time together, you get more closer with your family and make up for the times you have missed being with them.

Do some art work. One of the famous artists of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso had said that “Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life.” Art is about expressing your thoughts and creativity. Art isn’t just for children or for those who are talented. It’s for everyone because it is in our nature to be expressive. Art has been shown to relieve stress, increases brain plasticity and many other health benefits. Many of the activities can be practiced at home such as knitting, photography, gardening and painting.

These are just a few ideas which can hopefully help us to overcome the boredom of staying indoors and yet enable us to learn many new things. Although most of the learning takes place when we go out and interact with others but considering the present situation of the world, we have to make the best use of it.
